The restaurant's charm lies in its unpretentious approach. While the dining space is small and suited for takeout—often using styrofoam and plastic utensils—reviews highlight the quality of the flavors. Daniel Andree describes it as "the best Chinese food and prices on the west side," showcasing its long-standing reputation in the community.
Dishes like the beef and broccoli and the Sichuan combo are particularly loved, making each visit a culinary adventure, despite some minor setbacks like packaging issues pointed out by Jeffery Seegert. Reviews for Jia Yuan
Review highlights
Based on 186 reviewsJia Yuan is widely recognized for offering consistently good and affordable Chinese food, particularly favored for takeout due to its quick service and generous portions. The family-owned restaurant in Grand Rapids garners appreciation for its friendly staff and reliable food quality, with popular dishes like beef and broccoli and Szechwan combos frequently mentioned. While the dining area is small and basic, often serving meals in to-go containers with limited drink options, this reflects the establishment’s emphasis on takeout rather than sit-down dining. Some feedback notes minor inconsistencies in sauce preparation, but overall, Jia Yuan is regarded as a dependable, budget-friendly choice for flavorful Chinese cuisine on the west side.
A great dinner option for consistently good, quick Chinese food on the Westside. The pickup order is always ready in 15 or less. And the family that owns Jia Yuan are nice. I never see anyone eating inside. The prices are cheap and the food is great!
I've been going here since I was a child and will continue to do so. This has been a family owned business for many years. It's not the best for sit down dining due to the smaller space, but the takeout has always been fabulous! I especially like the beef and broccoli. The portions are generous for the price and I usually get two meals out of one.
I have been coming here for years. In my opinion, best Chinese food and prices on the west side of GR and Walker/Standale. I have never been unhappy with a meal here. Nice people too! The dining room is small and you eat out of styrofoam and plastic utensils, that's true. But this is mostly a take out place, not a true dine in place.
I ordered the Mongolian Beef combination meal. Even though I ate in, I had to order from the front counter and the food was served in to-go packaging. I was left to get my own eating utensils and condiments. They have a VERY small selection of canned or bottled sodas. The first thing I noticed was that the gravy had been overthickened with corn starch/arrow root powder to the point of being gelatinous. In addition, the beef was of a consistency of having been way to tough to start and severely overboiled to tenderize it. Other than these issues, the depth and quality of flavor easily overcame the previously mentioned shortcomings. The amount of heat was perfect. Sadly though, no fortune cookies are included in the meal. If it hadn't been for the great flavors, I would have rated my visit with three stars instead of four. It is also the reason that I would go back and try other menu items. Next time I will avoid the beef and order chicken.
Food was absolutely delicious!! We both got the sechwan combos and it was very tasty!!
I’ve been going here since a I was a kid. I really appreciate the family dynamic and their hard work. Our favorite Chinese food place in the area
